Book Summary:
Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

     My rating: 5/5 stars
My first Kami Garcia book! Shocker, right? I've heard so much about her writing from her Beautiful Creatures series, but I've never had the chance to read the books. Unbreakable proved to me that she is, in fact, amazing. I loved this book to no end and I'm so thankful that Netgalley put this book on my radar.

The book is about ghosts/demons and how a group of kids who call themselves The Legion (an ancient society dedicated to fight evil forces and demons), live to get rid of them. Kennedy, the main character,  wasn't aware about this group, or that ghosts even existed, until her mother suddenly dies and a few weeks after that, a ghost tries to kill her too. She is saved by these gorgeous twin brothers who belong to the Legion and they explain to her that she is the fifth and final member of this exclusive group. Now Kennedy is thrown into a terrifying quest involving messing up with angry souls to seek out the weapon that can save the whole world from an evil demon.

I loved, loved, loved the concept of this book! Actually, I loved everything about it. It's such an entertaining read and a bit creepy too. At first I thought that the cover was exaggerating on the creepiness, but nope, it's perfect. It's not the type that makes you want to dive underneath the covers, but it does disturb you and makes you run for it when you turn off the lights. In every stage of the book, we meet several spirits with terrible pasts and reading about them made my stomach twist. I'm not a big fan of horror books, so I'm glad the author didn't go into much detail in these kinds of things, she was subtle and straight with the facts.

The characters were pretty cool too. It all revolves around the five members of the Legion and they are all smart,  good fighters and extremely loyal when it comes to protecting each other's back. Kennedy is the only one who's not as skilled as everybody else, but she has a trick or two under her sleeve. Considering she just learned about this hidden world, I think she does realistically well.

There's also a bit of romance inside this book between Kennedy and Jared (one of the twins). Jared is a brooding, quiet character and from the start it's quite apparent his growing attraction towards Kennedy, despite his best efforts to stay away from her. I liked him a lot, but I also liked his twin, Lukas, who also has a crush with Kennedy. Unbreakable up until now is not a love-triangle, but maybe in the sequel it is. I sincerely hope not though.

I'm excited to read Unmarked, the second book in the Legion series because I want to uncover all the secrets from the ancient Legion society and see what's in store for all of the characters. I've been hearing that Unmarked is better than Unbreakable and I just have to see that for myself. I'm so ready to be blown of my feet, but hopefully, not be scared senseless. ;)

You should give this book a try and I hope you end up loving it as much as I did!
